What Makes a Good Diet?

If you take a look at all the diet programs on the market today, you will see that a lot of them are the same. Usually they will suggest certain foods for you (or food groups) and also tell you to exercise. The follow up typically involves constant weight checks and the use of additional items such as fat meters. Do any of these things really help? Well, lets find out.

In the past, the only thing that caused humans to lose any significant weight was a simple lack of things to eat. When food became scarce those who couldn't handle it would end up dying. As a result of this, our body is quite capable of going hungry for long periods. When someone is overweight they will often try to limit their food intake thinking that the body will immediately start burning fat stores to compensate. This is not the case. The natural reaction of the body is to limit blood flow and hold on to food resources. Eating less food will not only make you tired and unhealthy, it will also train your body to hang onto food longer making it harder for you to lose weight in the long run.

There is a lot of talk in the dieting world about calorie, carbohydrate, or fat intake. The consensus is that the intake of too much of any of these can cause weight gain. This is essentially true. All of these things can make you fat. The truth is that only fat will make you fat! The human body has no real use for fat that is ingested. We cannot break it down and re-use it so we must either store it or get rid of it. Limiting the amount of fat you take in is the key to losing weight.

Most diet systems include some type of work out or at the very least encourage physical activity. Unfortunately most of them do a poor job of implementing plans that keep dieters active. Some do not even explain the benefits of an active lifestyle for losing weight. Having a consistent workout routine that fits your schedule and ability is very important when trying to lose weight. Only exercise will raise your metabolism thus helping you do lose weight more quickly.

Many diets incorporate lots of these concepts, but few manage to catch them all. It is important in any diet not to starve yourself and to stay active. The type of food you eat is usually pretty broad, but fat is never a good thing. Incorporating these tips can turn any diet into a great one.
