The Atkins Diet for Weight Loss

The Atkins Diet for Weight Loss

The Atkins diet has become very popular in recent years; many people have found that they can lose large amounts of weight in a short amount of time on the diet; many athletes and celebrities have also endorsed the efficacy of the diet in achieving rapid weight loss. Generally, people find that the Atkins diet is an easy diet plan to stick to because you can eat large amounts of foods that taste great, such as meats and cheeses.

However, it's important to avoid eating large amounts of saturated fat which many people erroneously do while on the diet, and it's important to take multivitamin supplements while on the Atkins diet, as it can interfere with how efficiently vitamins are absorbed by your body.

The diet essentially works by putting your body in a state called ketosis. Your body goes into ketosis when you are only eating a small quantity of carbohydrates each day. In ketosis, your body switches from using glucose as fuel to using ketones as fuel, as you aren't consuming enough carbohydrates for your body to use carbohydrate-derived glucose. Instead, your body makes ketones from fat - from both the fat you store in your body and the fat that you eat.

The process of producing ketones burns fat in the body and prevents fat from being stored in the body, leading to rapid weight loss. You should go into ketosis in a short period of time after beginning the Atkins diet, assuming you aren't eating too many carbohydrates. Stores that sell nutritional supplements also sometimes sell ketosis strips, which you can use to check if your body is in a state of ketosis; other signs you can check to see whether or not you are in ketosis is whether or not your breath and urine smell slightly sweet, as byproducts of the ketogenic process cause both your breath and urine to have a slight fruit odor. Ketosis is also beneficial for dieters because it naturally suppresses feelings of hunger.

You should still make sure that your low-carbohydrate diet is low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Eating high amounts of saturated fat even on a low-carbohydrate diet can lead to heart disease risks. Eating fiber is necessary for good digestive health, and since fiber can't be processed by the body it will not prevent you from going into ketosis. You should preferably get your fiber from non-starchy vegetables on the Atkins diet, as these allow you to get lots of fiber while eating little extra carbohydrates.

In addition, you should take a multivitamin supplement while on the Atkins diet. Ketosis can have a diuretic effect, causing many nutrients to be lost in your urine while you are on the diet, so you will want to compensate for that by taking extra vitamins. You shouldn't look at the Atkins diet as a long-term solution for eating healthy and keeping weight off. Long-term use of low-carbohydrate diets can damage your internal organs. Once you reach your goal weight, you should begin eating a more normal diet, keeping in mind to make healthy dietary choices so that you don't regain the weight that you have lost.
