Orthodontics Is The First Specialty In Dentistry

Orthodontics is considered to be the first specialty in the field of dentistry that basically deals with setting right the malocclusions or improper bites of the jaw and teeth areas. This condition can be caused by a lot of factors such as tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw make ups, or some other reason. The main reason for performing orthodontics is mostly for bringing in some cosmetic changes to the face. A typical example of this procedure is the placing of clips to prevent the teeth from pushing out and protruding outside the mouth. This indeed looks very ugly and fortunately can be corrected with the help of the above procedures or with the use of clear braces. While some orthodontists prefer making adjustment and performing procedures only to the teeth for giving a better aesthetic look to the face, others believe in a remake up of the entire face including the jaw and other parts. However, which treatment to adopt is entirely left to the orthodontist and depends on the nature of problem and condition.

There are a number of orthodontics procedures which are performed and the methods vary from person to person and condition to condition. For a total and comprehensive orthodontic treatment, the most commonly used material is wires which are inserted into the orthodontic brackets. These brackets can be made either from steel or some other material and they are basically used to move teeth and joints, either backward, forward or even sideways. It is a very complicated and delicate procedure and so only qualified people who have experience in orthodontics can perform such procedures and treatments.

For the treatment of crooked teeth, improper bites there are no other option available but to go for orthodontics treatments from qualified orthodontists. Once the actual problem has been fixed with the use of brackets, the patients will be asked to wear what is called retainers which help maintaining the teeth in the desired positions while surrounding bone reforms around these teeth. Hence using retainers is as important as going in for brackets in the initial stage. The retainers are supposed to be worn only for a fixed time period, may be for six months after which a review should be conducted with the orthodontist regarding the next course of action.

However, treating malocclusion is not very easy and before going in for any procedure or treatment, orthodontics involves doing a proper diagnosis of the problem and identifying the route cause. Only then the treatment procedure is started. To do this effectively and properly, it is very essential that the person goes through a full-fledged training in orthodontics. This course is a part of the dentistry field and runs usually for a period of three years. It is a tough course but once a person completes it, he has a lot of scope and potential, because getting a good orthodontist is a tough job.

While orthodontics is absolutely essential for many people for enhancing their looks and from the aesthetic point of view, many people cannot afford this treatment because it is very costly and unaffordable.
