Losing weight can be all in good taste

Laurie Poma, media relations for the WW Group, said Gales will also offer tips on healthful eating and cooking techniques, and will answer questions about Weight Watchers new PointsPlus program.

"This is an opportunity to taste different things that when combined with the rest of the Weight Watchers plan will help them achieve their weight loss or weight management goal," Poma said. "The idea behind it is to show people that it's not dieting, it's changing your lifestyle It's a multi-pronged plan to get people to lose weight by changing what they eat, how they view food, getting them up and moving, and giving them support."

The PointsPlus program launched a few days after Thanksgiving (likely when the leftovers were gone), and has quite a few changes from the old points system.

"You are still calculating points based on what you eat. You're keeping a running tally per day and per week," Poma said. "Most vegetables and all fruits are free,' so you don't have to count those toward your daily point value. You get more points, and this new plan allows you to eat more."

I followed the Weight Watchers plan several years ago when points were established based on a food serving's fat, fiber and calorie content. The new system leans towards healthier whole foods. Processed and high sugar foods eat up more points.

"It takes into account, fat, fiber, carbohydrates and lean protein," Poma explained. "On the old program, a banana was two points and so were those 100-calorie snack packs of Oreo cookies one is better for you than another. Under the new program, they're looking at what kind of calories you are taking in.

So now a banana is free, and the cookie pack is three points. While the Weight Watchers program can be followed online, Poma said people who attend meetings tend to do better on the plan.

"There's no bigger incentive to lose weight than to know you're going to have to step on a scale in front of people that week," she said. "When you surround yourself with people who are doing the exact same thing you're doing, there is not only motivation but also momentum. Everybody is celebrating your successes."

The Royal Oak WW center is located in the Northwood Shopping Center at 30935 N. Woodward Ave., just south of 13 Mile Road.
