Buying Cheap Bookcase

Whether you are starting out in a new home or redecorating an existing one a bookcase can be a very useful and attractive addition to a room. For readers they are of course a place to actually store books but they can be used as open display units, office storage space and even as somewhere to keep clothing. Pop a few baskets on the shelves and you have an attractive chest of drawers at a fraction of the price. A cheap bookshelf can look just as attractive as a more expensive one. The best place to buy a cheap bookshelf is online where you can find a wide variety of sizes and woods to choose from at a reasonable price. Mostly a new cheap bookshelf will arrive flat packed and you will have to build it yourself. This is not difficult and something that even a teenager can do.

There are plenty of things you will need to think of before you choose. Measurements will vary from place to place but the most common ones are mentioned here.

How many shelves do you want? A tall bookcase will have 5 or 6 shelves and stand about 180cm in height. A small bookcase will have 2 shelves and be about 91.5cm tall.

How much space do you have? The average cheap bookshelf will be 78cm wide but it is possible to get 'half width' ones which are 42cm. Self assembly bookshelves do not normally come any wider than this as the weight of books would buckle the shelf.

How deep do you want the shelves to be? Extra deep shelves are about 29.1 cm and standard about 20cm.

What colour do you want? A cheap bookshelf is made from chipboard covered to resemble real wood. The most usual are maple, oak, pine or beech effect and black or white. There are obviously more modern designs with different materials but they tend to be slightly more expensive.

Do you want draws? It is possible to get a cheap bookshelf with a couple of draw at the bottom. They are normally the tall ones and you lose a couple of shelves in the process. The draws will add about 25 to the price compared to the same bookcase without draws.

One of the problems with a cheap bookshelf is that when you move it you need to be careful. They are quite easily damaged and can fall apart as the chipboard deteriorates. In most cases this is not something that need worry you too much as they will still last for years if left in one place. There are more expensive bookcases on the market which are also self assembly and easy to put together. If you are planning to store heavy books or other items or like to change your rooms around a lot, they are probably worth thinking about.

More expensive bookshelves will look and feel more solid and heavy because they are. You will almost certainly have adjustable shelves and have the option of buying extra shelves if necessary, this is useful if all the books are paperbacks so as not to have a lot of wasted space. These bookshelves may not look quite so 'boxy' and have more decorative features which make them look more attractive.

There are no standard prices for these bookshelves. There are so many places that sell them that competition is fierce and there are often bargains to be had. Decide what you want and shop around and you are sure to get a good deal.
