Truck Insurance: Staying Covered Beyond Primary Liability

If you make your living as a commercial trucker for hire, you understand that you're taking a risk every time you start your trucksomething good commercial truck insurance aims to protect against.

Any number of things can happen on the road. You may find yourself the victim or even the cause of a traffic accident. You may park your truck in a lot and return to find it vandalized or stolen.

The point is that you need protection form incidents like these. You might think that your primary liability insurance will cover you in all of these examples, but you'd be wrong.

Primary Liability Won't Cover It All

Primary liability is the most basic form of truck insurancewhile it will cover the cost of damages sustained by the driver found to be not at fault. If you are the cause of the accident, all damages to your truck will need to be covered by you and you alone.

Physical Damage Truck Insurance

This can be alleviated by adding a physical damage insurance plan. This type of insurance will cover your damages, regardless of fault, for up to an amount specified in your policy agreement. Accidentally causing a collision is bad enough, so why suffer what could be astronomical costs of having to cover the repairs for your own property?

Non-Trucking Liability

If you happen to have primary liability truck insurance coverage provided for you by an employer while working as an independent owner/operator, this coverage most likely does not extend to when you are not on the job. In this sense, you have no coverage when not actively hauling a load.

If you wish to drive your truck at all recreationally or off the clock, you do so at your own risk. Non-trucking liability provides truck insurance coverage for those in between work periods during all the times they aren't covered by their motor carrier's policies.
