A Primer on Wisdom Teeth

By now, you're probably aware that by age 17 to 25, you will be growing four extra molars and their growth is sure to cause a little discomfort during a period of a few days to a little over a week. (If you're past 25 and haven't grown wisdom tooth at all, do not fret. About 35% of the population is blessed enough to not experience the slight discomfort of wisdom tooth growth.)

Wisdom tooth care is a particularly interesting subject because the eruption of wisdom tooth oftentimes leads to other teeth-related problems. The most common is impacted wisdom teeth, which can be further subdivided depending on the way they are angled or directed. In a nutshell, impacted wisdom teeth are those that failed to "come out of their shells" and will require extraction or surgery for complete removal lest they damage your otherwise healthy molars.

In cases when impacted wisdom teeth are not extracted, they can cause other problems that have the potential to become more serious conditions. For example, wisdom teeth can continue growing without ever breaking the gum line and in the process push your molars out of the way resulting to misalignments in the teeth structure. In more severe cases, the impacted tooth can lead to infections caused by food particles being entrained in the impaction. These are particularly nasty and painful infections and can require serious medical attention before being resolved.

There are also cases when the impaction results to cysts and tumors around the teeth. These cases highlight the need to see a dentist immediately once you feel that your wisdom teeth are not coming out right. Careful dental attention is necessary to monitor growth and make sure they do not cause complications and other unintended and harmful conditions.

Pay careful attention to your wisdom teeth so you will not have to experience pain from a bad growth. There is nothing else you can do to influence the way your wisdom tooth will come out and your best bet is at being vigilant so you are in the perfect position to address any bad results. In this, you will not need your wisdom teeth to be smart enough in making the right decision.
