Ideas on How to Keep Kids Entertained During a Wedding

Keeping kids entertained at a wedding is a simple process. First, you stay ahead of their needs. Then, you keep them involved. Finally, you create a kid space for them to crash in when the wedding becomes too much.

Make sure kids needs are met at a wedding by predicting what they will need and giving it to them before they need it. Schedule the wedding in the late afternoon so it won't interfere with bedtime. Assume they'll get tired anyway and set up an area parents can take their kids for naptime. Instead of expecting children to sit down for dinner like good little adults, make a buffet of kid food that they can eat from as they run around and play. At the very least, make sure to have kid-friendly staple foods like small crackers, cookies, or cereal, for the children who simply cannot wait another second to eat. Have portable DVD players or video game systems available for children who are bored, overstimulated, or looking for trouble. If you stay one step ahead of children's needs at a wedding, there will be little chance for them to lose control of themselves.

Predict children's needs by creating their kind of fun at the wedding reception. Hire a performer to keep them occupied and entertained. This could be anything from a magician or Disney character to a henna artist or face painter. Get both kids and adults involved in games. If this is an outdoor reception, host a relay race or Nerf football game. Getting them moving like this has the added benefit of letting them burn off energy and wear them out. Set up an arts and crafts area where kids and adults alike can create gifts for the bridal couple or wedding favors to take home with them. Design a photo scavenger hunt and let the kids scour the party for shots of the wedding couple kissing, the oldest people dancing, and the youngest wedding guest. Make the wedding or reception just as fun for kids as it is for the adults, and you won't have to worry about children growing bored or distracting adults from the wedding experience.

Another way to predict children's needs is to create a space for them at the wedding. Make a zone where they can relax and just be kids. If the wedding will be held at night, hire someone to throw a pizza party for the kids. Let them change out of their dressy clothes and into their pajamas. Cover the floor in pillows or mattresses, put out a spread of pizza, chips, and juice, and let them be themselves. This can be a place where parents drop their children off for the duration of the wedding reception, or it can be a place for kids to wander when they have had enough of mingling with adults. Creating a space just for kids will reassure the wedding couple that the wedding and reception can go as desired, and it will allow parents to relax and have fun at the party, knowing their kids are well cared for.
