If you suffer from anxiety, it can be one of the most frightening experiences of your life. The symptoms can appear at any given time and you may even feel like you are suffering a medical emergency, like a heart attack. Anxiety and fear don't need to take over your life; there are many tips and techniques you can implement in so you can feel in control again and live a more balanced, healthier, happier life.

Anxiety is more than physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, hot flashes and shortness of breath; it can also diminish your sense of self-worth. Your low confidence levels and feelings of inadequacy can hinder your ability to communicate with others, perform well at your job, or go through the day-to-day motions of life. You may become uninterested in spending time with your family; you may spend more time sleeping, or you may not get out of bed at all. This is not the way life was meant to be lived. Luckily, there are many relaxation techniques for anxiety that work extremely well.

One such method is meditation. Sit on the floor or on your favourite chair - it doesn't matter as long as it's comfortable. Make sure no one else is in the room or it will be less effective. Once you're seated, close your eyes and just focus on your breathing for a few minutes. Think of nothing else but your breathing - in through the nose, out through the mouth. Think of something calm and peaceful: the ocean, a nature trail, something you can resonate with. Use all of your senses to visualize yourself there. Can you smell the salt-water? Can you see the trees blowing in the wind? Can you hear the seagulls or squirrels? Try and be as descriptive as you can. Keep doing this until you are completely relaxed.

Another great relaxation method is to write in a journal. You can do this first thing in the morning or before going to bed, whenever you feel most at ease. Write down all of the positive things that happened during the day or the day before; list the things you are grateful for; write down how you feel at that moment. Is there anything you can do to make the day even better? This exercise will help you focus on what is going good in your life, not on your problems.

Daily exercise like yoga and tai chi are also greatrelaxation techniques for anxiety. They relax both your mind and your body and give you the confidence you need to live your life to the fullest. Don't forget to eat right. Getting your daily intake of fresh fruits and vegetables will have you more energized, feeling great and looking great too.
