Skin Discoloration - The Cause and Treatment

Skin discoloration, dark areas of skin that are not normal, can be symptoms of melasma. They are usually found on the nose, face and forehead. However, they could show up anywhere on the body. This is why they are sometimes called "the mask of pregnancy", more on this later. Most importantly, let's talk about not just the cause but the treatment.

Melasma is not a threat to your health. It is not usually a symptom of a health problem. But, it does cause some emotional pain, as it is damaging to your appearance.

When it occurs in pregnant women, it is referred to as the mask of pregnancy. The cause is believed to be hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, although there are some underlying causes and risk factors detailed below.

What are the Causes Skin Discoloration and Risk Factors?

The cause of the discoloration is melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color or tone of your complexion. It is secreted by melanocytes deep within the skin's layers, and then injected into new cells created by the mother cells located nearby. When the secretion of melanin is even, a smooth tan might develop. When the secretion is clumped or increased in some areas, but not in others, melasma appears. It is the same thing that happens with freckles and age spots.

Melanin secretion is stimulated by hormones, exposure to sunlight and by some environmental toxins. Estrogen and other sex hormones can cause increased production of melanin when the skin is exposed to the sun.

Things that increase your risk of melasma include thyroid disease, hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills and patch contraceptives. It may also occur as a reaction to medications and certain cosmetics. Melasma can be a symptom of Addison's disease, if it occurs as a result of slight pressure or a minor injury to the skin.

What are the Treatments for Skin Darkening?

Although many treatments are available, they are not without risks. They work by increasing the cell turnover rate, bleaching the skin or inhibiting melanin production. Mild acids are sometimes used to help the skin slough off the outer layer of cells. Those can cause redness, itching and irritation that is slow to heal.

One of the ingredients commonly used to inhibit melanin is hydroquinone. It has been banned as a cosmetic ingredient by the European Union, because of an increased risk of cancer that accompanies its use.

There is now a safe treatment for melasma and other pigmentation issues, it is a whitening day cream that contains an ingredient called Xtrapone Nutgrass.

Why the Whitening Day Cream Works

Xtrapone works by inhibiting melanin production by as much as 40%. Another ingredient included in the product is Functional Keratin. It has been shown to increase the production of new skin cells by more than double. This means the results will be fast.

What are the Benefits of the Whitening Day Cream?

The benefits include:

o More even skin tone

o Softer, smoother skin

o Younger looking skin, because of the anti-aging activity of Functional Keratin

o A happier and more confident you, as your appearance improves and the mask of pregnancy fades away

Additional Recommendations

You should take care to protect the area from sunlight while you are using the whitening day cream. Otherwise, the treatment will not work as fast, since the sun stimulates melanin production.

You will need to use the cream on a daily basis if you want to get rid of the melasma as soon as possible.
