Although there are many ways to earn online, there are really only two.
Many ways
There are complicated ways (e.g. start a web-based shop) and there are simple ways (e.g. selling things on eBay). There are ethical ways (e.g. find employment as a typist) and there are unethical ways. There are ways of earning a lot (e.g. Affiliate marketing) and many ways of earning a little. There are ways of earning money fast (e.g. paid online surveys) and ways that take longer (e.g. Blog marketing). There are ways that involve online and offline work (e.g. promoting your offline business) world or online only (e.g. Internet marketing). Some ways are expensive to get started and some cost very little (e.g. Bum marketing). Like the real world, you can earn online by being employed to perform work or you can take some initiative and try something entrepreneurial. This may involve more risk, but if successful, it will probably reward you more handsomely. The question is how do you want to earn online and what are you looking for?
Two ways
Like the offline world, you can have a go and learn through your experience, or you can get a formal education. Also like the real world the best way is probably somewhere in between the two; getting a hands on practical training, where you are mentored as you put into practice what you learn. Essentially then, there are two ways; either doing things properly by getting trained, or just 'having a go'. One way is simpler, more likely to be ethical (since you know how to earn without being unethical), more lucrative, often faster, entirely online, cheaper in the long run, less risky and more rewarding. It pays to learn how to earn money online just as it pays to learn how to earn offline.
I have invested a lot in my offline career, investing in training to make myself attractive to potential employers. I have spent well over a decade at 4 different universities.
