Attraction of The London Eye

London being a city that is steeped in history it is astounding that the London Eye has become in its very short life span the most visited tourist attraction in the city. The London Eye is one of the most visual landmarks in London. The London Eye is the biggest Ferris wheel in Europe. It is really one of the most unbelievable wheels in the world. Though it is still not as popular as the Big Ben, it is becoming more and more popular over the past years as it attracts many people around the world. And besides, it opened just a few years ago and it really does not carry a deep historic background with it yet. But if you are in London, it will be really hard to ignore this beautiful site.

Architects David Marks and Julia Barfield, Nic Bailey, Malcolm Cook, Steven Chilton, Mark Sparrowhawk, and Frank Anatole designed London Eye. Sir Richard Rogers wrote of the London Eye in a book about the project.

At the time it was erected the London Eye was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until it was surpassed by the Star of Nanchang (160 m) in May well 2006, after which the Singapore Flyer on 11 February 2008. The world's tallest Ferris wheel stands out as the Singapore Flyer, in Singapore. It's 165 metres (541 ft) high. It started rotating on February 11, 2008 and officially opened on the public on March 1, 2008. Standing at a height of 135 metres (443 ft), the London Eye has now become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over three and a half million people in one year. To put that into perspective, you would need 6,680 fully booked British Airways Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets to move that number of fliers!

There are 32 passenger capsules weighing almost ten tons and are attached to the circumference of the wheel. The egg-shaped capsules are air-conditioned and are big enough to accommodate 25 persons who can roam around the capsule, although there are also seats provided in the capsules.

When you go to London for a good sightseeing, you will most likely visit the Big Ben Clock Tower and the Westminster Palace or what is sometimes called the House of Parliament. Once you're there, you will never miss the huge Ferris wheel just at the opposite side of the palace. At that moment you'll realize how beautiful the London Eye is.
