Consumer Product Recall on Cribs: Nearly 26 Children Hurt Every Day

When placing your child down into their cribat night, you fall asleep easy knowing your child is in a safe place right? But according to a new study by the Journal Pediatrics, an average of 26 children suffer from crib-related injuries every day. As a result of all these injuries, nearly 11 million cribs, playpens, and bassinets have been recalled since 2007.

New data, collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, found that between 1990 and 2008 more than 181,000 children under the age of 2 were taken to emergency departments around the U.S. for injuries related to nursery products. 83% of those 181,000 visits were caused from falling out of cribs. Dr. Gary A. Smith, a lead author from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital explains, "Children are top-heavy, when children start to lean out over the top of a rail of a crib, they will topple forward."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has been working for years to advocate for safer cribs, and most recently has recalled approximately 500,000 bassinets. The CPSC agree's that more needs to be done in the future to make cribs and nurseries safer for children, andis work towards that goal. If you have anyconcerns about the crib your child is sleeping in, make sure to check the CPSC website for the latest recalls on all children's products. This effort has been put into place to make all nurseries, cribs, bassinets, and play areassafer for babies now and in the future. Legislation is currently being passed to make it illegal to sell sliding cribs, because these are the cribs used in most child injuries and death.
