Who Is At Highest Risk For The Flu?In the 2009-2010 flu season, H1N1 grew into the first flu pandemic in over 40 years. So far, influenza remains unpredictable, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expect to see H1N1, along with other flu viruses, throughout the winter.The 2010-2011 flu vaccine fights three viruses that are predicted to be the most common now, including H1N1, A H3N2 and an influenza B virus. Several groups of people remain at highest risk for serious complications. People with chronic problems such as asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease need greater protection. Both those over 65 and young children are also at high risk, as are women who are pregnant.Since only children who are six months of age or older should be vaccinated, the CDC recommends that people who care for young children get vaccinations to avoid carrying viruses to the children. The CDC also recommends that anyone with flu-like symptoms avoid contact with others for at least 24 hours after your fever ends without using medicine to reduce it.
