Africa.. The only continent that has this great diversity of wildlife to new found anywhere. It really seems to be the cradle of mankind. Where can you find Hippos playing in the waves of the Atlantic or lions walking on the beach of remote shore line or elephants sliding down dunes. The list goes on of why Africa is as special as a destination for the discerning traveller who is searching for more than just a holiday. Africa seems to breathe life into a person's jaded soul so much so people return time and time again to find that magical moment, where the soul connects with Mother Nature. Africa breathes and pulsates and reminds us of old dusty books we used to read in grandpa's loft depicting bearded horsemen riding after herds of wildlife and being chased by savage tribes. Sadly in today's modern world with instant access all we see on the media is war, poverty and unspeakable atrocities. But it is not all doom and gloom and there are many wonderful holidays and experiences to be had here and I say here because this is where this article originates from. I have witnessed many things in Africa that will make your blood run cold and then the next moment there is unbelievable kindness shown to all. It is that kind of place constantly in ebb and flow. It is what makes us yearn for more and to see what lies over the next dusty hill.
Africa is where the land and her people seem to be connected and be completely intertwined. Where the dusty cattle and game paths are like the spokes of a wheel all going someplace specific, some place called home. It is a funny place Africa we like to curse it, wonder at it, love it and sometimes we leave it. But like the spokes on the wheel we all seem to gravitate back, after all there is no place like it on the planet. The very essence of Africa seems to be tied up in her soil. It is released in such a fragrant burst after the first rains have fallen on the dusty soils and suddenly the very smell of Africa is released. It is hard to explain to a person what makes it special but there is that smell of Africa, which is just that
Thus all those that live in Africa and those that love Africa know how important it is to look after Africa and all her wonderful denizens. It is a task we must not take lightly as the very idea that is Africa can finish forever and it is becoming close as the problems multiply and the wildlife and ecosystems are ever more under threat from expanding multinational companies and simple over population harvesting a resource that is bending at the waist. We need to be ever more vigilant that by destroying the very thing that holds Africa together, the soil how will the animals will survive? Everything comes back to the soil, even the smell.
