Easter Holidays in Seville

Seville is a beautiful city located in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in Spain, and it is a very popular destination with travellers. If you decide to take a trip to the city during the Easter period, you will find that the residents have made the city even more colourful than it usually is! This is due to several festivals that take place around the period of Easter in Seville.

One of the biggest celebrations for your Easter holidays in Seville, indeed in the whole of Spain, is the Semana Santa. Semana Santa, which translates into English as "Holy Week", is a very important celebration to the Spaniards. The festival represents the last week on Earth of Jesus Christ and the preparation of Semana Santa is taken very seriously. Indeed, Semana Santa celebrations can be traced as far back as the 14th century with 17th century traditions still in place today. Holy Week runs for seven days and begins on Palm Sunday, ending on Easter Monday.

In Seville, as in other parts of Spain, the organisation of Holy Week falls to Cofradias, brotherhoods of men and women, with at least 57 groups working on the special events for the city. The mainstay of the celebrations is the street processions which are quite solemn but are very colourful to see. Easter visitors will be able to see highly decorative floats, which have detailed depictions of Christ on the cross, Christ carrying the cross or other important Biblical figures such as The Virgin Mary.

Another tradition that happens around your Easter holidays in Seville is the Feria de April, the "April Fair". This celebration originally began as a cattle and agricultural fair back in the 19th century, but has come to represent the culture and traditions of the Andalucian people in recent years. During the Feria de Abril, families, businesses and the community as a whole come together to have a week-long celebration with music, dancing and bullfighting. You will see in your Seville apartment how the city is festive.

The area around the Guadalquivir River is transformed into a temporary "city", filled with colourful tents which are decorated with paper lanterns. These tents are usually dance halls where music such as flamenco can be heard and people can dance into the early hours!

During the daytime, as well as the tents to visit, there are various events in the April Fair's itinerary. This includes elaborate and beautiful equestrian displays and several bullfights which attract first-class matadors from all over the country. Visitors are very welcome to celebrate the festivities of Semana Santa and Feria de April with the Andalucian people. Easter holidays will never seem the same after experiencing these intense and vibrant festivities in the fantastic city of Seville!

If you want to come for Easter holidays in Seville you have to book now your Seville apartment because people come from all around the world for this special event in Spain.
