Bay Area Family Activities on a Budget

No matter what time of the year it is or how bad the economy gets, the Bay Area family won't run out of new places to explore and fun things to do. If you're looking to stretch your dollar without sacrificing the quality of fun, these three great destinations will keep the entire family entertained no matter what your budget is.

Sadiedey's Caf

Wouldn't it be great if you and your partner could enjoy a leisurely meal while the kids play quietly nearby? If this sounds like your ideal weekend, look no further than Sadiedey's Caf, a fantastic family restaurant with a large play area designed for kids and tweens. Sadiedey's is not just a great place to get a healthy bite to eat; it's also home to one of the best indoor playgrounds in the city. The play areas are colorful, spacious, clean, and divided according to age group one for kids five and under, and one for kids age 6 and older. Not only does this protect smaller children from the rough antics of the older kids; each play area has activities that address the social and developmental needs of its target age group. For instance, the toddlers section has a Collaborative Play Train Table, which teaches them to master social skills like taking turns, sharing, and following rules. Active older kids get to enjoy interactive video games like Wii Sports, air hockey, and Dance Dance Revolution in the tween room.

Most parents tend to forget that Sadiedey's is not a day care center; the staff may be friendly and courteous, but they will not be around to keep an eye on your child. Like a playground in the park, you might want to check in from time to time to make sure your child is doing all right.

Admission for kids up to age 12 is $6.95, while siblings are $4.95.

Crab Cove Visitor Center

Take your kids to enjoy the great outdoors at the Crab Cove Visitor Center. Though this area is more known for its beach and barbecue area, the visitor center itself has a small interactive aquarium that you can explore for free. They have two 800-gallon aquariums that serve as home to several indigenous bay creatures and an interactive learning center with powerful microscopes. In here, your child can look through the microscope and view live sea specimens up close. The visitor's center also has hands-on displays where your child can build a crab inside-out, view the mudflats from the point of view of a lugworm, and dive into the San Francisco Bay without actually getting wet. Once you're done viewing the displays, you can enjoy a picnic at the beach, play Frisbee in the park, and take it easy for the rest of the day. Just make sure the kids don't collect or disturb any creatures they encounter at the beach.
