Choosing Children's Magicians and Entertainers

From the age of 4 or 5 onwards, children become obsessed with their birthdays, thinking about the day and the party for months in advance. It's one of the few times when they are the complete center of attention, and they are allowed to dictate the terms of the party - from the type of cake to the people they want to invite.

For most parents, however, one of the biggest things to worry about is the entertainment. It is possible, especially as the children get older, to organize your own fun, with bouncy castles or trips out. For younger children, an entertainer is usually a good way to make a party memorable and to give you and the other adults a break. This article aims to share some of the most common entertainment types, and their pros and cons.

The most common type of children's entertainers are magicians. The most important thing to remember with magicians is that you will pay for the quality of the show. The more a magician charges, the more hi-tech their gadgetry will be. The age of the children at the party will be the deciding factor here, as the older the child, the more deception will be needed to entertain them. Magicians usually don't allow for audience participation, so only go for one if your guests will be able to sit and listen.

Clowns and balloon modelers (often the same person!) are also very popular, and tend to be a lot cheaper than magicians. They require less set-up and equipment, and are more interactive with the children. In the case of balloon modelers, they tend to leave each child with something to take away from the party, which can save you money on party favors. The main drawback of clowns is it can be hard to find a good one, and just picking one out of the White Pages can be a bit of minefield. If you have friends with young children, put some feelers out on the grape vine to see if anyone knows who to hire and who to avoid.

Other entertainers tend to be more sideshows, such as face painters. The cost tends to be lower, but the problem of reliability and quality can be an issue. However, as they're more a bit part of the main event, it doesn't matter so much if they're not of the best quality, as the kids will adore running around as a lion or butterfly.
