Santorini Greece - Volcanic Paradise

Santorini is the southernmost island of Greece's Cycladic group in Aegean sea.Like Delphi's glorious ancient theater or Meteora's otherworldly rocks, the Greek Island of Santorini must be seen to be believed. The raw and elemental beauty of volcanic landscape is adorned by the gleaming,gravity-defying villages to great effect.

Santorini emerges from the deep blue Aegean like no other landmass. It is easy to picture it as it once was:around island with central volcano whose cone imploded during an eruption, the resulting crater flooding with water. This deep void is the caldera and what now remains as Santorini, following numerous further eruptions,is the outer crust of the original island on three sides. The inner rim of this is a steep, dramatic cliff of black and red rock,to which the island's famous white villages cling.A small, smoldering cone juts out in the middle of what was the original island, now the startling blue Aegean, while another part, cut off from the outer ring on the far side of volcanic cone, has emerged as the islet of Thirassia.Though many have tried to describe it,it is hard to capture the sense of peace that view creates.

Santorini has changed shape twelve times over last 400,000 years - from a single land mass to small islands that were joined and than split apart again.Geologically,Santorini is part of Milos, Nisyros in the eastern Aegean, the Methana peninsula near Athens, and Mt.Etna Italy.
