When TV Is Appropriate For Children

When TV Is Appropriate For Children

It seems like there are a lot more movies and television these days that are mainly geared towards a younger audience. Movies about flying ants and talking robots or dogs are popping up left and right. Granted, adults can get just as much amusement out of a flying ant than a child can, but that does not defeat the purpose. Parents often plop their children down in front of the television when they go out and leave a babysitter or during dinner. Some kids will sit and watch television all day long if they are not told to get up, which increasingly is happening. The television is becoming an irreconcilable part of the lives of youth, and it might not be a very good thing. The majority of children begin watching television heavily prior to even kindergarten. Babies are even being encouraged to watch TV now with shows like little Einstein and things that are said to help your baby learn. Babies are so good at entertaining themselves; there is no reason to sit them in front of a TV screen. It has been said that babies shouldn't even be watching television that no child should until they are two years old. At that age, only very short spurts are acceptable as well. It is during these times that children are learning and processing major skills for the rest of their life. Early exposure to television can hinder that development. Your child needs to learn social skills and how to use their imagination and how to interact with things. Plopping he or she in front of the TV screen is not going to do that. Playing with coloring tools, dolls, trucks, or anything of the sort is always better. Encourage your children to use their imagination to play.Another major issue with letting your children watches too much TV is accepting a sedentary lifestyle. You cannot allow your children to sit on their behinds all day. You are enabling them to be unhealthy and perhaps one day obese by doing so. You should set guidelines for TV time and guidelines for outside play times. Kids need physical activity to be healthy; it is what they are meant to do. In younger generations, kids always wanted to play outside, it was fun. It is a fundamental part of a child's development.Violence in TV shows, even children's shows, has also been proven to be detrimental to a child's development. Even if the violence is in a robot or animated show, it does not change the fact that it is violence. Kids easily retain such emotion and violent examples. It is dangerous to over expose your child to such media. If they do watch these shows, it is the parent's responsibility to let them know it is completely different from reality. Regulating these shows is also a good idea.As your kids get older, you can become more lenient with the TV. Teenagers generally have a decent sense of when TV is appropriate amounts and when it is not.
