Supplies needed: One sandy beach, shells, a stick, your imagination, willing kids!

Directions: This activity can be modified for any age group.See ideas below, and add your own to make your day at the beach not only fun, but educational! These activities will encourage cognitive thinking skills, shape, number, letter recognition, and both gross and fine motor skill development.Shh.. they will have so much fun!

Toddlers

Shape recognition: Draw simple outlines of various shapes spread out on damp sand.Ask your toddler to complete different tasks using the shapes.Ex. STAND on the circle, CRAWL to the square, JUMP on the triangle, BLAST OFF from the star.

Letter and Number recognition: Use the same technique as above. Use seashells to create letters and number in the sand.

Counting Skills/Color/Shape recognition: Collect shells with your child(ren).Using the shapes you have already drawn on the sand, ask your children to place different amount of shells inside the various shapes.Ex. 3 white shells in the circle, 2 black shells in the triangle, etc.

Preschoolers/Pre-Readers

Letter recognition: Draw letters of the alphabet in various places in damp sand, not in order.Ask your child(ren) to complete different tasks using the letters.Ex. Draw an X over the U, JUMP on the J, CRAWL to the C, and on and on.

Counting: Count, add, subtract using seashells and other materials found on the beach.

Readers

Reading: Write several words (at your child's reading level or one up) in various place in the damp sand.Ask your child to circle, X out, place shells on, stand on, etc. as you call out the words.. they have to read them to find the correct word.

Spelling: Bring along your child's current spelling word list. Call them words out and have your child write them in the sand with a stick.

Math: Use shells found on the beach to add/subtract. Write math problems in the sand with the stick.

A day at the beach should be exciting. When prepared with ideas like these, and your own creations, your kids will have a blast!
