7 Budget Killers That Sabatoge Your Financial Plan

The Basics:

Many of us go through our day spending money and we don't even realize it. From the morning cup of coffee at Starbucks to the interest you pay on credit cards, money tends to leak out of our pockets while we are not paying attention. Below are 7 items that contribute to the leaking wallet and have a way of destroying your well thought out monthly budget. Modifying your behavior to avoid these habits and pitfalls can save you hundreds each month, which translates into thousands of dollars per year.

Let go of the Starbucks. A basic tall coffee a Starbucks cost $1.50. Buy that every day before work and you end up spending $325 for the year. If you buy a fancy coffee (think latte) and a pastryyour annualcost triples to over $1,000.

Payoff the credit cards. The interest on a 2,500 credit card balance at 20% when you pay 100/month averages out to $275 per year.

Get rid of the cigarettes. If you smoke just a half pack a day of cigarettes at a cost of $5 per pack your total annual cost is $912.

Avoid speeding tickets. 1 speeding tickets($200 or more) can destroy your monthly budget. Go to www.speedtrap.org to find out where the speed traps are and how to avoid them. Get 4 speeding tickets a year and you've easily blown $800 - $1000.

Avoid parking tickets. Each parking ticket is anywhere from $35 - $55. If you pay a parking ticket 30 days late the price goes up to $55 - $75. Pay 3 months late and you probably have at least doubled the cost of the original ticket. Get 3 of these a month and you are paying between $105 and up to $300 a month. Add this up for the year and you're out $1200 - $3600.

Bring your lunch to work. Lunch at the cheapest fast food you can find is at least $6 but often when you go out with co-workers or get a sandwich or a meal from a decent place you will spend $8 - $10 or more. Do this twice a week and you've spent $20 which translates to $80 a month. Add it up for the year and you're out $960.

These 7 items taken separately may seem like a few dollars here and there but add them up and see what you get. Conservatively these items will cost you over $5,000 per year. So before you make that Starbucks run or go 45 in a 25mph zone think of what you could do with an extra $5,000 CASH each year.
