Stroke'D Out in Vegas. The Strokes Play First Show of 'Angles' Tour

The Strokes were reborn on March 12th in a small carpeted venue nestled in the belly of Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The Strokes have taken a bit of a break, not releasing an album for nearly 6 years, but they knocked the dust off with this show. 'Angles', is the much anticipated forth album from the band will drop March 22nd.

This show was unlike any other I've ever witnessed. The contrast of a clean, bejeweled ballroom and five dirty rockstars can only be described as 'Deliciously Chaotic'. The doors opened at 7pm and the 4 hour wait for the band to go on was enough to get the crowd just north of riotous. Opening act, Devendra Banhart & the Grogs were far less than well received. In fact I walked out to go get some dinner while they played on. When I returned to my seat, the openers had just finished their set. It was still another hour before The Strokes would take the stage, tensions built. "Julian probably OD'd backstage", was one of the comments I overheard. I must say I was getting a bit antsy myself. Then...

The lights dropped. The audience roared, The floor shook.

The first song, 'I can't win' was barely audible over the crowd singing along. I have not seen or felt such energy in a while. The band was clearly impressed with the enthusiasm of the crowd. I'm not sure if it was nerves or what but shortly after they went on a small "uh oh" was muttered by Julian, followed by what appeared to be vomit. Like a true fucking rockstar, Julian said, "Now that that's over, let's get on with it." Fucking rock and roll. The set was laden with crowd pleasing songs that the crowd sang back to Julian. The first single "under cover of darkness" was recited by the audience verbatim. Need I remind you, the album hasn't even dropped yet?

The show barreled on.

An air of maturity surrounded the band. Some band members are fresh from rehab while others have become parents while working hard to stay sober. The banter between Julian and the crowd was benign and cordial. The show ended.

They exited the stage.

They returned.

The encore was a massive four songs. Julian remarked that the crowd was "Juicy" right before the last song. The crowd erupted when the opening chords of 'last nite' was heard. Everyone was singing and dancing, including myself. I must say that the show was everything I hoped for. The Stokes have weathered the storm and come out cleaner than ever, here's to your success. Cheers
