It is the most magnificent monument of India boating of breathtaking architectural brilliance. It is poetry in white marble symbolizing love. Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Today this monument is a World Heritage Site known for its Indo-Islamic architectures, lattice work, inlay decorations and calligraphic representations. Located on the banks of river Yamuna, this monument was built in the 17th century. Around 20,000 skilled artisans and workers worked together for 22 years to build this monument.

The fascinating architectural design of this splendid monument is based on the interlocking arabesque concept. The principle of self-replicating geometry and symmetry of architectural elements was used in its architecture. The four towering minarets of the monument are 150 feet high. Wherever you go in Taj Mahal you will find intricate pietra dura inlay work of floral designs and calligraphy.

At one point of time the monument was decorated with precious gems like jasper and agate. The Quranic inscriptions can be seen on the main archways. The most enchanting and main dome of the monument has a diameter of 60 feet and it towers to a height of 80 feet. Just under this dome lie the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. The monument is surrounded by beautiful and lush green gardens fitted with fountains.

Agra Fort

It is also a World Heritage Site and a popular attraction of Agra. Also known as Red Fort, this fort was built in 1565 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. This fort boasts of wonderful apartments which will surely take you back in time to the era of raja-maharajas. Some of them are Diwan-e-am, Diwan-e-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, Jehangir Palace, Pearl Mosque, Musamman Burj and Khaas Mahal.

Sikandra

Located at a distance of only 13 km from Agra Fort, Sikandra is the tomb of the Emperor Akbar who was the most secular ruler of the bygone era. His own mausoleum reflects the perfect combination of Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic and Jain architectural elements.

Fatehpur Sikri

It is another must-visit tourist destination of Agra. It is famous for the tomb of a Sufi Saint Salim Chisti who was a revered saint of his time. Devotees come from far and wide to the mosque of this saint to take blessings.
