Know what you have to do, the requirements you need to prepare and the duration of SR22. You may be a careful driver but there are instances where untoward incidents may happen leading to the suspension of your driver's license and requiring you to have SR22 insurance.

There are various reasons why one will be required to have SR22 Insurance, some of which are enumerated below:

When you are caught driving while intoxicated with alcohol or prohibited drugs (DWI);

When you are driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or prohibited drugs;

When you had an accident and you are not covered by an auto insurance;

Getting too many tickets in a very short period of time;

Driving with a suspended or revoked license;

If you committed any of the above infractions of law, it will result in the suspension of your privilege to drive, hence the need for SR22. The list may not include all the reasons that will result to the suspension of your license.

What to file?

When you are required to have SR22, you need to file a document evidencing your financial responsibility. The essence of SR22 is to ensure that persons or parties who will be incurring loss or damage will be sufficiently compensated for their loss or the injuries they have suffered. File it with the Department of Motor Vehicle or DMV. This filing will in effect lift the suspension of your license allowing you to be able to drive again.

In Illinois, SR22 may consist one of the following certificates by the insurance company which shall be directly filed to the Secretary of State:

- Operator's Certificate: This is a document that you will use to prove that you are authorized to drive a particular vehicle with the expressed permission of the actual or registered owner in the case that you do not own the vehicle you will be driving.

- Owner's Certificate: The driver covered here is the owner of the car.

- Operators/Owners Certificate: This certification is issued covering all cars either owned or not owned by the driver.
