The Steps To Baby Development
The Steps To Baby Development

In the first month of your baby's life, his or her needs are basic ad few. They will require a lot of sleep for the practice of growing, which they will be very good at. They will need feeding, changing, burping and holding and they will want to feel comforted and safe. At this point, your baby's world is a mass of hundreds of new and confusing sensations and they are very sensitive to your touch and love. A mother should take this time to enjoy bonding with her child.

It's amazing to watch a child's development as they become more aware of the world around them. Their eyesight will get clearer and they will start test driving their own body and be fascinated at what it can do, flexing their fingers, grabbing toes and wiggling all those new, untried muscles. They might even start to quirk a smile or two and make adorable expressions and soft, silly noises as they discover themselves.

From the second month on you will notice your baby get more and more active and adventurous in their movements. They may find the strength to roll around, start kicking, lifting their head and drooling over their blankets.

At only three months old your baby will start to become more coordinated and deliberate in his or her exercises. You'll notice them getting stronger in preparation for their first steps and wonderfully they will start to recognise and be more aware of you and visiting well wishers, start to notice the differences and realise they are a separate entity.

In month four your baby will continue to enjoy and play with their movements and, as practice makes perfect, they will become more coordinated and tactile, reaching out to grab anything within their tiny grasp. Language development is still slow but they will be experimenting with different sounds and beginning to feel words.

By the fifth month you may find that your child is more vocal and he or she may cry for more exciting reasons than food or nappy changing as they are more aware of your company and are beginning to realise that they can discover more. There is an innate need to learn and develop and they will want more attention as they roll around and even begin to crawl, if unsteadily, and want to feel and touch and experience. They will be comfortable in your presence and not want to be alone as well as starting to distinguish his or her parents as the ones closest to them and different from strangers whom they will begin to withdraw from in favour of the protection of those that love them and spend the most time with them.

As they hit a full six months a lot will have happened in their development including an increased awareness to their surroundings and actions. They will start to react to building blocks of different colour, notice when they knock them down and realise if they roll away. They will be able to roll all the way over now and may even try sitting upright and cushioning their fall as natural instincts take over. Remember that this is merely a rough guide and every baby is different. It is not uncommon for these new skills to take longer to hone but you will see and marvel at the progress.
