The Toddler Bed or The Family Bed?
The Toddler Bed or The Family Bed?

All parents needs to consider both the advantages and disadvantages to co-sleeping. One of the most common disadvantages is that sharing your bed with a child that is kicking and wiggling will lead to a less restful sleep for the parents. It is true that the parent of a child that sleeps in their own baby crib or toddler bed gets a better quality sleep at night. If your baby gets into a routine of falling asleep next to you, this may lead to experiencing problems leaving them with a friend or relative in the future.

The most important reason for the discouragement of co-sleeping is the danger that is involved in this decision. Children are much safer when sleeping in a baby crib or toddler bed. There are chances you could roll over a small infant, they could smother in heavy bedding and they can fall off of the bed as well. It has also been advised that parents shouldn't share a bed with their baby if they have been drinking alcohol, taking heavy medication or if either of them are a smoker. Also it can be hazardous for parents that have worked longs hours and are extremely tired. Small children should nap in their baby crib or toddler bed for safety purposes as well.

There are advantages to co-sleeping, if you and your partner both work during the day, co-sleeping can give you extra time to spend with your children. There is no doubt that this time together with your children at night can help bring about a stronger relationship between you and your child. Mothers that breastfeed and share their bed with their baby tends to breastfeed their babies for longer periods of time. This may be true because they find it easier to breastfeed in bed rather than getting up during the night going to the baby crib for feedings. Babies who sleep with their parents rather than in a baby crib or toddler bed cry a lot less, therefore get more rest. If the child does awake during the night the parent is close enough to quickly respond to them.

Another advantage is that some people believe that babies who co-sleep with their parents are more independent, more outgoing and more confident as adults. This can result in an adult that has higher self-esteem and better stress-management skills. Children also tend to perform better in relationship building skills as adults than those who sleep in their own baby crib or toddler bed.

If you choose to transition from co-sleeping to a baby crib or toddler bed, expect a challenge. It all depends on how long you have allowed co-sleeping as to how the transition is to be made to a toddler bed or baby crib. A toddler bed or baby crib transition can be more difficult for the child the longer the period of time that they have slept with their parents. The longer the period of co-sleeping usually leads to a more difficult transition process to baby crib or toddler bed. There are great tips to help parents in this transition process.

Ultimately the child and both parents should be able to benefit from the final decision. Everyone has an opinion on what they feel is best for children but all families situations are different. To be most effective this decision will take both parents being on the same page. Whatever the decision, make sure it is the right one for your family.
