Lapland slowly turns to spring and summer

Lapland has been a snowy landscape for a long hard 200 days as the locals and holidaymakers have enjoyed lots of winter sports and had a very snowy Christmas. The skiing is still going on because the snow will last on the ski slopes for the longest and in areas where there is a large collection of snow but down in the village the snow is beginning to show signs of giving in and it will not be long before Lapland will give way to the spring and the beautiful colours of autumn will show.

Lapland has seen warmer temperatures earlier this month and much the same as other countries, the weather can change and arrive earlier than expected. The locals in Lapland look forward to the summer as much as the winter where it is a chance to recharge their batteries and enjoy some real me time. Most of what goes on in Lapland is tourism based and they rely heavily on tourism as a form of income and although there are levels of tourism in the summer, the winter of course sees the main influx.

Many locals will switch to summer activities and offer bike riding, canoeing and white water rafting but what happens to the Reindeer. The Reindeer are more plentiful in Lapland during the summer, well at least it seems so. The Reindeer will move around more in the summer months as they move wherever the food is and you will see more of them by the roadsides and across the fields in the summer months. The winter will see the Reindeer rounded up and kept closer to where the food is more plentiful.

Many people ask if Lapland seems like Christmas in the summer months and that largely depends on whether you have ever been to Lapland in the summer months. If you have then you will be able to identify with it more but if your first time to Lapland is in the summer then it may be hard for you to feel like this is the real home of Santa Claus. Lapland in the summer can have quite warm temperatures and we all know none of us associate Christmas with warm weather. However Santa's house can be seen and if you go in the Autumn months it is really nice as everyone is getting ready for the snow. The first snows in Lapland happen sometimes as early as October and being in Lapland for the first snows is a magical experience.
