Travel Cards: More than Just Free Trips

Travel cards are very popular because of the free plane tickets. Depending on how much air miles you accumulate, you can travel anywhere for free. What you might not have realised when you signed up for your travel card is that it brings other perks aside from the great rewards programme.

Almost all credit cards, regardless of the rewards programme offered, some with a package that offers standard travel perks. Aside from the very basic feature of credit cards, which is wide acceptance and the accessibility of ATMs worldwide, standard package features that are advantageous to travellers include easy access to customer service anywhere in the world, replacement of lost or stolen credit cards, fraud coverage up to a certain limit, and the ability to forewarn the credit card company of travels in advance so as to avoid the hassle of having your foreign transactions flagged as possibly fraudulent. While all these is already more than acceptable, some travel cards actually come with other add-ons that make these pale in comparison.

Obviously, with travel cards, the above features already come with the package. However, some travel cards also automatically add some protection features that in other cards only come when extra premium is paid. Some protection features that come with travel cards include:

1. an expanded fraud coverage - Not only is the fraud coverage larger, but fraudulent transactions that happen before the card is reported stolen or lost is even covered.

2. expedited card replacement - Even if you lose your card in a foreign country, you can ask for a replacement and get it within days.

3. cash advance - While waiting for your replacement card, you can get cash by going to a partner bank and getting a cash advance to cover incidentals. This is especially handy if you lose your entire purse and have no other way to get hold of cash fast.

4. extra points for transactions in a foreign country - You may get additional/bonus points each time you use your card in a foreign country. This, of course, adds to the air miles you have already accumulated, taking you a step closer to realising your goal of getting a free trip using your card.

Different travel cards offer different travel perks, and not all offer the perks listed above. However, it is wise to find out what other perks you can expect from travel credit card offers you come across as you compare credit cards so that you can get the most out of your card, and not have to wait for your free plane ticket to enjoy the perks.
