A holiday is a chance to go and see places that you can only dream of; destinations that remind you of paradise and tranquillity. And there is often a lot to do on these trips, and one attraction is cave systems. carved in to the rock by the sea or glaciers, they are truly majestic. There are some fantastic caves that you can see on your travels, so why not try one of these:

Elephanta Caves, India these caves, carved out in the fifth century are an expression of religion, and the intricate carvings show Siva Nataraja and the three faces of Trimurti.

In ancient Greece, gods were a massive part of daily life and this cave at the base of mount Parnassus was a place of worship tp Pan. There was an altar at the entrance of the cave for sacrifices.

St Paul's grotto, Malta St Paul, a roman prisoner, was shipwrecked here and is thought to have sheltered in this small set of caves. In the bible it states that St Paul performed miracles and was thought of as a god by the locals.

Sof Omar Caves, Ethiopia this Muslim country believes that Allah revealed the cave opening to a sheikh in the twelfth century, and now they have columns and buttresses that form a natural building structure.

Minoan Caves, Crete Crete has a whole host of cave systems, all thought to have been mythological. The caves date back to the Bronze Age, and the myth of the Minotaur who used to roam these caves. The Dikteon cave is where Zeus is fabled to have been born and the Idaian cave is where his mother hid him from the wrath of his father.

Actun Tunichil Muknal, Belize

These caves have mythological connotations and are supposed to have been the caves you had to go through before reaching the underworld. There are shards around the cave, indicating the kill hole, where the spirit escaped.
