Ever since the discovery of the disease, researches have been done simultaneously to combat it. The virus causes the fatal Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS as we commonly know it. Since decades, therapies and theories are being incorporated in the medical treatment for AIDS to develop the most effective kind of solution to cure the fatal disease. Though, unfortunately, till date, no medicine has been formulated to eliminate the disease completely, there are some therapies, that definitely slow down the progress of the disease and ensures a better quality of life while on medication. The Antiretroviral therapy gives the assurance that the growth of the HIV has been slowed down and that the rate of spread of the disease is deadened. When the Antiretroviral drugs are teamed with other drugs, the therapy comes to be known as Combination drugs.

There is constant research work done in this field, and new vaccines are being formulated and updated to combat the disease in the most effective manner. Most recent research shows, that a particular gene, that is found in the rhesus monkey can be helpful in preventing AIDS. If this particular gene is modified and incorporated in the medical regime, it might prove to be a break through development in the entire effort to cure AIDS. There are treatments that work on dealing with the latent viruses and not the ones that are not killed by the medication. There are three layers of the therapeutic regime. The combination drugs are not applicable in the first phase. When there is a stability gained after the first phase of therapy, the combination drugs are given. A big cause of AIDS however is ignorance amongst people. To begin with the treatment, dealing with the ignorance of the general mass is the most challenging part. Many patients never come out in the public eyes when they are detected with AIDS and unfortunately, die in mere oblivion. There is a wide spread fear and apprehension amongst people regarding the way the society will react to the infected person.

We shall now take a look at some of the basic treatments for AIDS.

The first type of treatment is the antiretroviral therapy, which does not cure the disease, but helps people stay protected from illness for a long time. Patients need to take these medicines for the entire life. The drugs are often called ARVs.

The combination therapy involves the intake of three or more kinds of anti HIV medicine at a time. This therapy of taking more than two to three types of drugs at a time is known as HAART or Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy.

HIV becomes resistant to a drug very fast and that is the reason, why more than one kind of drug needs to be taken in order to combat with the latent virus and not just deal with the ones that do not get killed by the therapeutic treatment.
