A night time Soiree at Museums in Paris

France is a country that loves to celebrate its culture and is rich in artistic endeavours. Initiated in 2005 by the French Department of Culture, La Nuit des Musees is a unique initiative to cultivate interest in museums not only in France but across Europe.

Roughly translated, the term La Nuit des Musees means the Night of Museums. On one night each May museums in France and Europe keep the doors open till late at night for visitors to enjoy the exhibits at night and most often organise various fringe events to coincide with the night. In France, cities that participate include Paris, Bordeaux, Cannes and Toulouse. Together this covers almost 1000 different museums. What is more, the entrance for this special night is absolutely free! On any other night, entrance into any one of these prestigious museums at night would only result in a trip to the police station; however in this case, it is more the merrier!

2011 marks the seventh consecutive year of the Night of Museums. With museums in the city of Paris such as the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d'Orsay and Musee Picaso keeping their doors open till late at night. Other museums include Victor Hugo's house, the Musee d'Art Moderne and Petit Palais.

Each year has seen more and more innovative fringe events cropping up to ensure that on this night visitors to France do not get to bed till at least 2am, as the event operates from roughly 7pm to 1am. Some fringe events which took place last year and will no doubt be continued this year as well at some of the museums includes fooz ball tournaments, guided tours conducted by period costumed guides, historical re-enactments, concerts, music performances, ballets and competitions for children.

Whilst no two years are ever exactly similar, certain events are repeated but the atmosphere can never quite be duplicated. If you plan to visit Paris any time soon try to make sure your visit coincides with Night of Museums. One of the finest Palace Hotels Paris has to offer is Le Royal Monceau, Raffles Paris. An ideal and convenient Luxury Hotel Paris, it can be highly recommended to the discerning travellers to Paris.
