City Index (http://www.cityindex.co.uk/) takes a look at the news activity affecting the financial markets on 14th March 2011.
Investors' appetite for riskier assets including stocks has retreated in light of the Japanese earthquake.
This morning (March 14th), the VDAX-NEW volatility index hit a three-and-a-half-month high, soaring by 9.5 per cent, Reuters reported.
Such a surge means the index - which assesses the buy-and-sell options of the top 30 stocks in Frankfurt - has hit its highest mark since December 1st.
Following suit, the FTSE 100 volatility index rose by 8.7 per cent and the Euro STOXX 50 volatility index advanced by 5.7 per cent, the 08:42 GMT report noted.
Meanwhile, the German DAX was trading down by 1.10 per cent as of 09:22 GMT to stand on 6,904.53 points.
The French CAC-40 had managed a 0.19 per cent lift 24 minutes later, while as of 09:30 GMT the FTSE 100 had boosted Friday's trading performance by 0.10 per cent.
Commenting on European trading platforms, market strategist at City Index Joshua Raymond said: "Insurance firms were the key drag on European indices for a second consecutive session on Monday, with the sector losing over one per cent in early trading."
