Group Fitness Insurance - The Protection You Never Knew You Needed

Fitness instructors face a plethora of unique vulnerabilities to lawsuits, and group fitness instructors might be most vulnerable of all. As a group fitness instructor, you are regarded as an expert and several people put their health and safety into your hands which each class. This can sometimes lead to unforeseen events and accidents which can cost you big time. Because of this danger, group fitness insurance has become very important.

Unfortunately, accidents happen. Even the most careful and professional instructor may have accidents occur on their watch. Sometimes these accidents are the fault of the instructor, and sometimes not. The sad truth is, if an accident or injury could be construed to look like negligence or error on your part, you will be held legally and financially responsible. Luckily, there are policies which can prevent these incidents from being financially devastating.

Group fitness insurance is a very specific type of policy designed to cover accidents, injuries and other unfortunate events which may befall a group fitness instructor. Think of it as professional liability or errors and omissions insurance for your particular industry. Many times, a facility or gym will carry its own policy which will cover the company and to an extent the employees of the company. These policies, however, rarely cover independent contractors. If you are listed as such with your facility, you will need to get your own coverage.

Those who own their own gyms or fitness centers must find policies which will cover the grounds, building, themselves and their employees. Sometimes this requires two different policies, but many times you can find exactly what you need in one package. The trick is to know what you need and know what to ask when you are looking for quotes. Before speaking with any agent or consultant, take the time to jot down what your particular gym offers, its assets and the employees you have and their specific roles or duties. Then speak with at least three insurance representatives and take note of what coverage they believe you need. Compare notes to find the similarities and then shop for a package with the suggested coverage.

In the past, there were many small and independent fitness facilities which did not have group fitness insurance. Reasons usually cited were the cost and a failure to see the value. As the lawsuits for everything from a stubbed toe to whiplash began to climb, however, so too did the realization that this coverage is a necessity. Many facilities have been forced out of business because of a lack of coverage or having too little coverage to hedge financial losses. To avoid such a disastrous outcome, take the steps to find the best group fitness policy to fit your needs.
