Known as one of Bolton's most famous exports of the last few years, Peter was born in 1973, to an English father and Northern Irish mother. Having attended secondary school at the Mount St Joseph High School, he left with one GCSE in Art, and then embarked on a series of jobs. These included working in a toilet roll factory, a supermarket, a bingo hall and a cash and carry. These jobs did however provide him with influences and material for his later stand up stage shows as well as his TV appearances and programmes.

Further education then followed in the form of a degree course at the University of Liverpool, however he dropped out due to the high level of written work. He then applied for a Higher National Diploma or HND in Media Performance at the University of Salford, which he did very well in, as it involved a stand up course.

He then embarked on a career as a stand up comedian, starting with a competition Manchester, which was hosted by his later collaborator, Dave Spikey. Peter won the competition, beating Johnny Vegas in the process.

Kay's big break started when he entered channel 4's "so you think you're funny" competition in 1997, with appearances at the Edinburgh fringe festival earning him a Perrier award nomination. This then lead to appearances at London's comedy store and the Barracuda club in Lincoln. Kay reached the stage of public recognition in 2000 after his sold out "live at the top of the tower" shows, leading to him appearing on Parkinson and Friday Night With Jonathan Ross Peter Kay Tour Tickets get sold out as soon as they go on sale .

Shortly after this stage of public recognition, filming began on his series "Phoenix Nights", as well as appearances in adverts for John Smith's bitter. Phoenix Nights is a BAFTA nominated sitcom series about a working men's club in Manchester. It revolves around Peter Kay, who plays the owner of The Phoenix Club, Brian Potter.

Peter kay has however since returned to the stand up circuit, as it is something he has said he loves. This has lead to a series of sold out tours across the UK. He is widely recognised as one of the finest stand up comedians working in the UK today. With all of his gigs often selling out within hours of tickets going on sale, Peter Kay is as popular as ever.
