The oldest recorded hot air balloon festival is the Gordon Bennett Cup in ballooning. The event takes place every year and the location varies. The first race started from Paris, France and was sponsored by millionaire sportsman and publishing mogul, James Gordon Bennett Jr. The objective of the race was simple- whoever could fly furthest from the starting point won. The Great Texas Balloon Race: This annual race all began when a local dentist and hot air balloon pilot agreed to advertise the opening of a new mall by draping a sign from his hot air balloon. The race now takes off from the East Texas Regional Airport.6. The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival: The Gatineau hot air ballooning festival is organized by a non-profit organization and hosts over 60 hours of hot air balloon performances. The event is attended by over 20,000 people and takes place over Labour Day weekend. There are hundreds of hot air balloon festivals that take place every year all over the world.
