If you have somebody in your family who's been into a break up recently, who needs your compassion but you just don't know what to do, then here are some tips you can apply to help a family member get through the crisis.
I assume that you've experienced the same situation before, and would most probably agree that hearing someone you love tell you they don't want to see you anymore is like having a part of you amputated. If not, then now you have an idea of what your family member is going through.
The most common way for people to express sympathy and compassion during times like these is by saying:
You'll get over it.
He/She was no good for you
Time heals all wounds
Move on
It's his/her loss
You can try consoling them this way. However, these are rational explanations and most of the times would not help very much. Though these are tried and true things that people say to make others feel better.
You can even start talking trash if worse came to worse. Citing the worst quality you noticed about the partner of your family member.
However, there might still be cases when the pain is so sever that even this will not work. During these times what you can do is to just be there for your family. Be his/her support group. Sympathize and let them know that you understand and you truly and deeply care.
These situations are painful; still, time can heal all wounds. Just show them you are there for them. No matter what happens.
