Home Business: How to Start Your Website

Home Business: How to Start Your Website

If you are anything like I was not that long ago, you are fed up with your job and looking to start your own home business website. So you go online and search for "home business." When that comes up with too many results, you start trying to find a way to narrow it down a bit. After doing tons of looking, you discover that you can promote someone else's products, you can promote your own, or you can buy into a business and go from there.

In any case, you need some basic computer knowledge to get started. So here are the steps to building your website for your own business.

#1 Buying a Domain Name

The domain name is where your website will be located and how people will find you, for example, www.DomainName.com. The name should reflect your business. If possible, you want the domain name to be your main keyword and end in '.com,' '.net' or '.org.'

You can purchase a domain name across the web. Some of the more popular places to purchase one include GoDaddy and NameCheap.

#2 Finding a Host

Now that you own a name, you have to find someone to host the website for you. This is where you will put up the website and update it as needed. Again, you can find a variety of hosting sites online. The more popular ones include: GoDaddy, HostGator, and HostMonster.

#3 Building the Website

Somehow you will need to make the page look presentable. Unless you know a bunch of HTML code a CSS, then you will want to use a template based method.

Currently, WordPress is the most popular template available. You can find free templates or purchase different ones to use with WordPress. After that, it is merely a fill in the blank type system.

If Wordpress does not suit your needs, then Joomla, TYPO3, and Siteframe are also popular webpage builders.

#4 Get Your Site Listed in Google

"Build it and they will come" does work online. If Google does not list your site, then you have no hopes of anyone finding it. Therefore, the first thing you want to do is tell Google about your site.

Use the Google Webmasters Tools to list your site, and then you need to start promoting it. Books can and have been written on the best way to promote your website to achieve top rankings in Google and the other search engines. However, to make it short and sweet, you can use social marketing (Facebook, Twitter), article marketing (Ezine, GoArticles) or you can use bookmarking (Digg, Reddit, Furl).

After doing the above, Google will find your site and start listing it as part of their search results. This will give you what is called "organic" traffic.

Obviously, these are the most basic steps to starting a home business website. You will also want to learn about keyword research, SEO techniques, and targeted markets. Once you get the basics down, the rest will start to snowball.
