Things you need to know before travelling to Japan

Japan is completely culturally different to the west, so if you are plannningh on taking a trip then the best advice is to immerse yourself with information on their culture. The Japanese mentality is that of a group, rather than us in the west who focus on being individual. For that very reason, if you visit Japan, people will treat you like a celebrity, talking to you on the street and asking you to pose for photos.

Table Manners

- Most Japanese restaurants will give you a small wet cloth before your meal. This is to wash your hands before eating. When used, fold and put by your side on the table. Don't use it as a napkin or wipe your face with it.

- Its perfectly acceptable to make slurping noises when eating. It's to show your appreciation for the food.

- Always leave a little food on your plate if you are finished, as this is a sign that you are full. If you finish your food, your host will think you haven't had enough and serve you some more.

No Tipping

The Japanese feel that tipping is rude, as their service is included in the price. If you tip, they will most often argue with you to give it back.

Japanese Baths

The Japanese baths are nothing like we have in the west. You wash before you go in, and they are a place you would then enter to soak and relax. These areas do not take into account race, age or language; they are just a place of relaxation.

If you are planning on travelling to Japan this year, make sure that you have valid Travel Insurance.
