Is Information Online Trustworthy

The Internet is probably one of the greatest marvels of the 21st century. A platform for voices that want to be heard without becoming verbose, the Internet is also is surprisingly the stage for some of the greatest frauds and thefts the physical world has ever witnessed. We must understand that the Internet is a magnifying glass that can make small companies look big and big companies look bigger.

It can morph into a silent revolution or gather people into a movement. It speaks in a million tongues and is not accountable for what it says- promising the skies and draining out your pocket. We speak of the virtual world of the Internet which is reason enough for us to have cyber squads and cyber laws for all the crimes that thrive on the Internet ranging from a wave of phishing e-mails to stealing user identities. Online auction frauds account for 3/4th of all the cyber complaints registered with the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

The commonest one being a case where you buy an object by entering your credit card details and get nothing in return. The Nigerian 419 Letter is another fraud but yet patriotic e-mail that asks people to donate for the starving countrymen. These emails are all in capitals and are an ideal source of cyber scam. Beware of offshore companies that lack a physical address or bank account even though they have a glamorous looking website that literally makes you want to spend it all on them and then there's the favorite of them all, that all of us at some point of time must have received- The Congratulations email- stating you've Won an IPod, plasma TV, etc.

A thrill that goes downhill in seconds emptying your bank account in no time. But then, we can't whiplash all the portals that figure out on the Internet. There are honest companies and genuine auctions which do give you your money's worth, but with the flip side of the Internet so glaring, could information online be trustworthy is the million dollar question.
