Common Types of Brain Injuries

This deterioration of the cells in the brain might be due to a situation, condition, diseases or injuries. The brain is affected normally when there is an injury to the head. These impairments can be as a result of a lengthy shortage of oxygen provided to the brain, certain transmissions, trauma and neurological upsets.

Types of Brain Injuries:

There are two common types of brain injury. They are Traumatic and Acquired. The levels of each type of can be mild, moderate or grave. Now we shall discuss each type in detail.
Common Types of Brain Injuries

Traumatic Brain Injury:

When a person is struck violently or the head hits with force in such a way that the brain in the skull starts moving, then it may result in a traumatic brain injury. Even if the skull breaks it may result in the injury to the brain.

A traumatic brain injury happens when a person gets a blow to the head or a jolt that causes the brain to move inside the skull or even collide with the skull. For instance, traumatic head injuries may be the outcome of being hit in the head or face or being violently shaken or falling and striking one's skull on the ground.

The general indications of traumatic brain injury are:

1. Watery discharge of spinal fluid through the ears or nose.

14. Lack of sensation or itchy feeling in some or any parts of the body.

Traumatic brain injury may be either open or closed. An injury is said to be closed when there are no visible injury and no cracks to the skull. Normal closed head injury may be the outcome of road accidents due to which the head may move rapidly or aggressively either forward or backward. The striking of the brain on the skull may cause it to move resulting in injury. The injury may also occur due to the brain tearing and the tear causing damage to the brain.

Open head injuries may cause a fracture or piercing of the skull. This leaves the brain exposed. Open head injury may be the result of a gunshot or dull trauma to the head.

Acquired Brain Injury:

Acquired Brain Injury can occur anytime after birth. It is not due to birth or even not hereditary. It occurs at the cellular level. This type of injury affects the whole brain. The causes of such an injury may be due to obstruction, heart attack, Meningitis, excessive use of alcohol, brain tumors, and exposure to toxic substances, trauma to the head, stroke and many other causes.
