Have you ever heard of a place where you have a huge sculpture of "Kuravan and Kurathi" The tribal couple in Ramakkalmedu? Famously named after two steep hills which forms the first Arch reservoir in India, Idukki. We are not talking about Idukki reservoir here, but a border hilly destination which offers excellent views of paddy fields & farms of Tamil Nadu and cities like Madurai, Kambam & theni from a height of 3500 feet from the sea level. In Ramalkkalmedu, there are many hills, but two are climbed often by young back packers, local youngsters and people from nearby districts like Kottayam, Kochi and other close by places. It is locally popular for a one day trip.
One of the hills here holds a huge sculpture of Kuravan, kurathi and a young boy hangs on her which is about 100ft. height and is made of cement and is a wonder how it is made up on such a high terrain where you can reach only by walk. Once on top, you can view many hills around and some parts of border state of Tamil Nadu. Another interesting view is the windmills, which you can see a little far on top of other hills nearby, makes you conscious about the fact that you could nearly be flown away by the wind.
The second hill that people normally choose is the one with steep rising rocks with a real awful view of the mountain. The way up there is through a forest, which keeps you cool till you reach halfway up the hill. From the halfway up the hill, you will have a nice view of the places around and if you can make it up to the top, there you have the real wonders this place offer. One major attraction that we found here is that, this trip can be bit adventurous up there as you have to walk around few rocks to get the real beauty of Tamil Nadu lying around 3000ft down.
If you are in a group, you have your own place up there, not being mixed by the crowd around, and ideal place for young people. The place offers not many accommodation facilities and other tourist related infrastructure. That might be the reason its not being promoted much.
The place is accessible by road till the bottom of the hill and is around 200km from Cochin. In the direction of Idukki.
