How Will Retirement Be For You?

How Will Retirement Be For You?

It is a sobering thought that you may work for many years earning a living, looking after a family and advancing your career, but in the end your body fails you. We all know of someone who died not long after retiring. Or we may know of someone who having looked forward to and reaching those so called 'golden years' only to suffer a stroke or some other debilitating illness which negatively changes their life. Their time is then spent waiting in doctor's rooms and hospitals or in front of the television waiting for life to pass by rather than off enjoying the world and all it has to offer. You may not be able to travel like you always dreamed of doing when you had time. What about playing golf, swimming, hiking, working in your garden or around the house - maybe? Or even if you have not planned to be particularly active when you retire, will these years be spoiled by chronic back or hip pain, a nagging illness or disability that demands much of your time and attention?Strange how we take the time to write a will to make sure our family is taken care of when we are no longer here but what about our health? What arrangements do we make to ensure we are strong and healthy enough to ensure we enjoy some quality time to do the things we would like to do when we retire? What could ever be worth more than our most important asset ...our health? How could we have said all those years we were 'too busy' for our own self care? Too busy to fit in a couple of exercise sessions each week and too busy to eat healthy unprocessed foods because they take longer to prepare and cook..It is easy to live in denial that proper exercise or healthy eating is 'optional' or a luxury frivolous pastime if 'we have time'. Do those people not understand what happens to the human body without it? Well, it gets sick...Without vigorous movement as in manual 'work' or intentional exercise our body does not have the mechanism to stimulate the 'growth and repair' hormones that renew and repair old worn out cells and tissues. Without this rejuvenation a downward spiral of degenerating health follows.A weakened human body is a sitting duck for the dozens of 'lifestyle diseases' that have become epidemic in our technology driven world. Everything from heart disease, cancer and diabetes along with dozens of others we in affect give ourselves. Why would anyone want to work for 40 or 50 years, look forward to time to enjoy life but risk never getting that time? If it was important would we not be doing everything we could to avoid disease and stay healthy? But wellness does not happen on its own it needs some effort put into achieving it and proper exercise and healthy eating are the most basic requirements.Health and our degree of wellness is the result of choices that are made each and every day for years and decades before we retire. A no exercise lifestyle and a diet of processed foods is a recipe for a shortened life. No retirement to worry about here, just getting to retirement age will be a miracle. We each have a choice here about how we want to spend these special years after our working life is over. But planning and action is necessary to be successful in extracting the most enjoyment out of these years as without health nothing else matters.
