Ethical Spooks: Fair Trade Chocolate At Halloween

Fair Trade and Organically produced chocolate has been hitting the news lately, with more and more of the major brands trialling lines with chocolate grown and produced using ethical and sustainable practices. Brands such as Cadbury and Nestle have been dipping their toes into ethical chocolate and finding out it is good for business, the environment and workers. Other , smaller brands that make organic chocolate are becoming mainstream with many brands now showing up in supermarket aisles.

So what is fair trade and organic chocolate? Fair Trade is a way of conducting business that empowers all involved in the process, not just the owning company. Workers involved in business that operate along fairtrade lines benefit from increased wages, healthy and supportive workplace conditions and practices (equal employment opportunities) and often receive support for their families.

Organic chocolate is made from ingredients including cocoa, milk and sugar that are grown using certified organic farming practices. Organic chocolate has no residue artificial pesticides or fertilizers used in the growing, harvesting and processing and so is a healthier option.

Often organic farming and fair trade business practices go hand in hand but there are certification processes that regulate both industries separately to help you make the best decision. Often in the past a company could label themselves as "fair trade" or "organic" but their definitions of these words was open to interpretation. Now that third party regulators are in operation, a consumer can made an informed choice easily by looking for chocolate that displays labels by one or both of the certification bodies.

Ideally to be sure that you are getting the best product available, with the most ethical background behind it, look for chocolate labelled as both organic and fair trade by an authorised third party certifier this Halloween and inform your friends and family about this sustainable and ethical sytle of sweets.
