The Truth About Money and Happiness—You Have Been Lied To

We often hear this idea about money and happiness passed around in modern society. This idea that money is not the key to happiness, and, in fact, that money does not really matter at all. Our society has embraced this idea that money is unimportant. We even tell ourselves the desire for it is inherently wrong.I find this is especially perpetuated among poor people, who seem to fear and loathe money and then wonder why it runs from them. They tell themselves it is bad so they don't have to worry so much about not having it, but then they spend their lives always worrying about it, living from bill to bill and enduring stress as a result. When it hits their hands, it often disappears even faster. But think about a family who cannot feed their children...does money matter to them? Think about a woman who cannot buy her child the operation needed to save his heart and his life? Does money matter to her?If you think about it, the whole world, the entire system and all systems within, completely revolve on and are fueled by money. What is the catch? How did this happen?A recent article published in Times Magazine reported the findings of a recent study at Princeton University that indicates the unhappiest people make less than $75,000 a year and the lower you are beneath that mark, the less happy you are. And while the findings suggested that making more than $75,000 didn't equate to more day to day happiness, it does improve your satisfaction about how successful you are in your direction and purpose. It's another kind of happiness, but it is still happiness. This idea that money does not matter and that there is no link between money and happiness is a mythor even a lie that we tell ourselves. And it's a dangerous lie that is number one reasons you and those around you will never be well off.If you still don't buy what I'm saying, consider thishow did it make you feel inside when I suggested you and those you love will never have much money? Here's the truth about this money thing. Cash is nothing but paper, and in that sense, sure, money does not matterbut that's not what people mean when they say this. They are talking about the value of money not mattering, and that's all too false of an idea. Although it is only paper, what it represents to us is valuemore specifically, the money you receive is a direct representation of the value you create in this world. If you are not creating value for others, you will have very little if any. If you are creating massive value, you will have plenty. So if your bank account does not reflect what you want, you simply have not been out there producing enough value. It's a sign that you're living below your meansnot financiallybut living below your capability of creating something the world needs. If you take time to observe the poorest places in the worldthe areas that have the least moneyyou will notice something very disturbing yet at the same time very illuminating. These places where money is so scarce are often the most dangerous, shady, disease-ridden, ignorant, and miserable places in the world. They have the most crimeboth violent and non-violentthe worst education, and the highest rates of infectious disease. If this isn't a sign that a link exists between money and happiness, I don't know what is.It's true that it is not the only key to living a quality existence and it's true that it will not bring you happiness on its own. But to ignore its importance in the average person's lifeits ability to purchase everything that makes your life worth livingis nothing short of one of the greatest lies of modern society.Don't resent your own desire for money. If you want to help others and provide a contributing to society, I know of no easier way to do that than having value to give in the first placeto be able to support the causes you believe in and help the people who need it most. You decide what you do with a wad of cash or a full bank account. That's one of the most powerful things about itit's really your choice. But the longer you avoid money, the longer you avoid having that choice.
