Chemical Peels Popular Among Teens, Reveals Study

The cosmetic surgery statistics of the past several years show a distinct rise in the number of people undergoing various cosmetic procedures; however, the number of teenagers taking cosmetic treatments has remained constant. The American Society of Plastic Surgery says that the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures among teenagers are laser hair removal and chemical peels. Besides, teenagers are also interested in getting their noses fixed.

The number of teens expressing interest in chemical peels is on the rise. Once reserved for older women as a great way to either halt or reverse signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines, chemical peels are today a great solution for teenagers with acne or sun-damaged skin, which is a source of great agony to them. Parents should, therefore, never discourage their teens especially if they have acne or sun-damaged skin and want to know about chemical peels.

Cosmetic surgeons perform different varieties of chemical peels depending on the patient's skin and what he/she wishes to achieve. Superficial chemical peels, which are a simple and direct way to exfoliate the skin, are safer and do not harm a teenager's skin in any way. However, a teenager might want to take a deeper chemical peel, which might change the pigmentation of the skin. Chemical peels are not without risks, owing to which teens and their parents must spend several hours with the dermatologist discussing the various risks involved. The safest option for teens is to start with a superficial chemical peel and move on to a deep layer chemical peel treatment only according to the results of the superficial chemical peel.

Cosmetic surgery industry experts opine that teen cosmetic procedures, when performed by qualified and board-certified cosmetic surgeons for the correct reasons, can greatly enhance teens' physical, social and psychological well-being. For instance, a teen with oversized boobs who is the victim of cat calls and teasing will greatly benefit from a breast reduction surgery and so will a teenaged boy who is unable to remove his shirt in public because of embarrassing moobs.

Besides, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has made it easier for cosmetic surgeons, parents and teens by presenting a set of guidelines to evaluate teen candidates for cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and Rhinoplasty. First, the teens' physical maturity should be assessed; and cosmetic surgeons should never alter a physical feature that has not yet developed because it can seriously interfere with the normal growth of that feature. Second, the teens' emotional maturity and expectations should be carefully studied.

The doctor should spend several hours in pre-surgery consultation with the teenaged patient and his/her parents explaining the risks associated with the procedure, the recovery time and the significance of having realistic expectations. Third, teenagers should approach only those cosmetic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Teen cosmetic surgery can be a boon as long as a teen is mentally and physically mature, understands the procedure well and approaches a highly qualified and board-certified surgeon.
