Wetting the Bed - What Every Parent Must Know

Bed wetting can be a very difficult and emotional time for child and parent alike. Emotional support and privacy are vital to helping a child overcome a stubborn bed wetting problem.

Emotional support during this tough time is absolutely necessary for the child's well-being. The reasons for a bed wetting problem can be varied and even quite serious. However, don't let the shame of this stubborn habit be internalized by your child. They already know it is not right to wake up wet. But until the cause is discovered it is very important that you, as a loving parent, are supportive and proactive. Be a comforter, let them know you are on their side, there is a solution, and you are actively looking for that solution. That in itself is fuel for your child's success. I saw this first-hand when I baby-sat for a child who had a bed wetting problem. Once her Mom recognized this feasible solution she was 100% behind her daughter and the problem was permanently remedied in a few short weeks.

Do not label your child as a bed wetter or speak openly to others about the problem. For the child's sake keep it a private matter, only between the individuals who are a part of the solution, such as the baby-sitter or the doctor. It will help them tremendously to know that you are not speaking openly about it, that you are 100% on their side, and you are doing whatever it takes to get the help they need.

An aid may be necessary to help overcome a bed wetting problem since it is a stubborn habit. A wetting bed alarm is a valuable aid which has demonstrated effectiveness in helping to break this habit. A wetting bed alarm is a device with a moisture sensor attached to an alarm designed to help wake up the child the second they start to wet the bed.

Bed wetting is something most parents will face at one time or another. Be supportive, leave off the labels, and get the aids you need.
