For many kids the summer is a time for earning some extra cash. Older kids especially welcome the chance, as having their own cash gives them the freedom to buy things they want or to hang out with their friends more. There are all kinds of odd jobs out there, and kids these days really do have a lot of options:
Flipping produce- For kids who live in rural areas, flipping produce is a great way to earn fast cash. They can buy cheap produce at a farmers market, put up a small stand along well traveled roads, and sell the produce at a small profit to people passing through.
Basic Gardening- There is never a shortage of lawn mowing jobs to be had. Kids mowing lawns is practically an American tradition, especially in the summer. If your parents can help you get equipment, so much the better, you can do more lawns in less time. Kids can charge up to $25 or $30 for typical lawns, and a little more if there is some basic gardening to be done like trimming hedges or pulling out weeds.
Umpiring for little league games- Older kids who are very familiar with baseball can take advantage of the many little league games that run through the summer months. Umpiring for little league games is pretty easy money, and it can be a lot of fun. Kids are paid $40 - $50 a game.
Join the work force- A lot of companies hire kids for part time jobs in the summer. Older kids can often get low level office jobs. There are also a lot of openings for summer camp counselors for older more qualified kids, or even just summer camp helpers. They can also work the food stands at local sports venues.
For kids who want a fun but productive summer, there is never a shortage of fun and even challenging ways to earn money.
