Reading is an activity most children look at as boring chore forced on them. Although most schools require students to complete novels, provide access to multiple children's books and test at required levels this does not mean all children possess the same level of reading skill. Reading is a skill that children will carry with them through adult hood, and just like any other skill it needs to be practiced. We may be heading toward a paperless society however the internet has only increased our society's need to be completely literate.
It is important for children to be introduced to books at an early age. Children should view reading as an enjoyable activity where they can have adventures, experiences and learn lessons without ever leaving their home or classroom. There are a wide range of kid's books out there that are not only educational, but also fun to read for the whole family. When children are read out loud to they learn how to use proper punctuation just by listening and following along with the words on the page even if they can't read them. In addition to learning proper punctuation reading also expands a child's vocabulary. If they do not recognize the word at first if heard to read again they will be able to associate the word and figure out its meaning on their own.
The ability to not only read but to read well gives children the key to an unlimited amount of information they can access through books, libraries, the internet, and their schools. This information available to them through sources such as multicultural books, can teach them about other cultures and people from all around the world. Help your child develop one of the most beneficial skills to living a successful and full life by encouraging them to improve their own reading skills.
