Weight Loss at 50-Why We Gain Weight As We Age

Why have I gained weight? Is weight loss at 50 achievable? Why is it harder to take off those extra pounds? These and other questions run through our mind as we struggle to keep the same figure we had in our 20's 30's and even 40's. It's time for some straight talk: You weigh more than you did ten years ago. The extra pounds didn't arrive all at once but accumulated gradually before you even realized they were climbing on board. Now you're looking at some serious extra poundage. But that's to be expected as you get older, right? Wrong.

Most people think that gaining weight and getting older go hand in hand, but the reason we gain weight isn't just about getting older. One of the culprits is our metabolism. The reason we were able to keep the weight off in our younger years was because our metabolic rate burned the calories we took in. The metabolic rate varies from one person to another and is affected by gender and age. Speeding up our metabolism is a must if we are to achieve weight loss at 50 and beyond.

The question we must ask then is how do we speed up our metabolism? In order to achieve weight loss at 50 and for the rest of our lives for that matter that is the question we must answer! Well there a few different ways. The best way to jump-start our metabolism is to exercise. Exercise will reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass. By increasing lean muscle mass, metabolism will increase and aid in the weight-loss process. Muscle tissue uses more calories than fat tissue because it has a higher metabolic rate. Aerobic exercise, like walking, swimming or cycling, has the added bonus of speeding up your metabolism for 4 to 8 hours after you stop exercising. Additional calories will be burned off long after you stop exercising.

Weight lifting burns fat and increases your lean muscle mass which increases your resting metabolic rate. A combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training is best for optimal fat burning and metabolism boosting. Exercise in the morning and you will reap the benefits of a faster metabolism throughout the day, or exercise in short 10 or 15-minute bursts every couple of hours to keep your metabolism pumping. Exercise any time you can fit it into your day and you will burn that fat away. By exercising just a little more than usual you can speed up your metabolism and use up stored fat in the process which help. So as you can see weight loss at 50 is achievable if we set our minds to it and dedicate ourselves.

The bottom line is that even though we burn fewer calories in our 50s, doing the same activities and the same number of them that we did in your 20s, 30s, or 40s weight loss at 50 is still achievable. The key to preventing weight gain is to compensate by adjusting our food intake, exercising, and generally becoming more physically active.
